例えば、世帯収入の不平等化は先進国共通で見られる現象であり、日本でも緩やかに格差は拡大している。欧米に関して、その背景の一つとしてあげられているのが家族形成の変化である。この命題は三つのメカニズムに分かれており、それぞれ(1)家族構造の変化（シングルマザーの増加など），(2)女性の労働市場への進出，(3)学歴同類婚の増加の三つに分解される（McCall and Percheski 2010）．
日本の場合でも、(1)のひとり親世帯の増加は貧困率に直結するので、おそらく全体としてみた時の不平等度にもそれなりに寄与しているだろう。それじゃ不平等の上の方を見てみると、学歴同類婚が要因としてあるのだが、これが日本ではうまくでない。
ここ最近（2015年12月18日）、この点でひたすら悩んでいたのだが、もう開き直ってこの事実から出発して理論を組み立て直す必要を感じている。日本でも高学歴層の同類婚は絶対数として増えているが、なぜ同類婚が不平等に結びつかないかというと、最初の点、つまり女性の高学歴化と労働市場への進出が「ゆるさ」が原因としてあるからである。
このように考えると、おそらく(3)の仮説の背景には、高学歴化すると女性は就労するようになるという暗黙の前提があるのだろう。アメリカや他の西欧諸国についてはこれは当てはまるかもしれない（南欧は日本に近いかもしれない）。
それじゃ日本では同類婚と不平等の間に関係ないですね、と簡単に引き下がって良いものか、この点を考えている。退散するのも一つだろうが、もう少し粘って、上記の命題を修正して何か言えないかと考えている。
一つの手は、女性の高学歴化を、労働市場と結びつけず、他の有利さの獲得へとつなげる道だろう。そこで、結婚市場と出るのがBrintonの本でLeeがやっていることである。有田先生の本を読んで、韓国の高校生では女性だけに対して、高卒大卒間の賃金格差の揺れ幅がその年の高校生の大学希望率と相関を持つことが指摘されている（学歴間の格差が拡大すると高校生は大学進学希望をするようになる）。女性だけなぜ反応的なのか、本では明確に言明されていなかったが、結婚市場を持って来れば、説明できるかもしれない。Mareも学歴間の障壁の一つとして、学歴間の賃金格差について言及しているし、見込みのない仮説ではないと考えている。
この点に関して、現在（2016年2月8日）になって思うのは、日本における高学歴同類婚（夫大卒×妻大卒、ないし準高等教育）に該当する層は多くなってきたのはここ最近であり、現在の高学歴女性に該当するような人たちは、たとえ高等教育に進むだけの学力があったとしても、かつては様々な事情で一歩手前で止まり、結果として上昇婚と呼ばれる結婚パターンを形成していただろうということである。日本社会における女性の上昇婚志向はそれなりに強いと推察され、それが未婚化の一因になっていることはおそらく正しい。仮にそうした層が（たとえ高学歴を獲得しても）将来的には経済的な責任は夫に委ねることにし、自分は育児・家事をメインに、パートタイムの形で就労調整をすることを理想として持っているとするならば、Brintonの緩い関係も納得がいく。先日スウェーデンで博士号をとられた日本の方と話していて、いわゆる「仕事も家庭も完璧」という母親像は、特に日本で強いわけではなく、スウェーデンでも存在し、完璧な父親像に比べると母親像のほうが強く共有されているという指摘を受けたのだが、Esping-Andersenが主張するような「未完の革命」を推進するような高学歴女性にとって、こうした完璧な母親像を体現するには、現在のフルタイム就労者に要求される条件は厳しすぎるのかもしれない。要するに日本では高学歴女性のライフコースを見ていくと、フルタイム就労を続けるか、夫の収入が高いので結局パートタイム就労をせず専業主婦となるかの二極化的なトレンドが確認できる。ただし、学歴の高くない男性と結婚する場合には就労に対する必要性が増すと考えられるので、やはり、高学歴同類婚の層の異質さをきちんと考えねばならないだろうなということを考えている。修論も、学歴同類婚と不平等の関係という問いから、女性のライフコースを踏まえたやや動学的なものにシフトする可能性はある。結果として、幅が広がって良いかもしれない。
