Over the three days from October 26th to 28th, I attended PopFest, a small conference for early-career demographers (mainly) based in Europe. This was my second time attending the conference (the last time I attended was 2018 in Oxford). I was the only participant crossing the Atlantic this time (last time I was the only participant coming from Asia). I really love the smallness of this conference that allows us to talk more with other participants who are in a similar stage. I found several people who share research interests and already look forward to seeing them again at future conferences.
Another motivation for attending this time is to visit the European University Institute. It was like an IAS in Princeton in terms of size, or perhaps way smaller than I expected. Florence is a bit too commercialized though beautiful in itself. I stayed for two days in Bologna after the conference, which I liked much more. The food was so delicious that I wish I could come again after another (hopefully demography) conference, maybe somewhere in northern Italy.
アメリカのデモグラフィーは少し社会学によりすぎなのですが、ヨーロッパのデモグラフィーはいい意味で社会学と距離感をとっていて、個人的には居心地がいいです。僕は同じステージにいる人と話すのは大事だと思っていますし、実際話していると楽しく勉強になります。こういう小さなカンファレンスで知り合いになって、PAAのような大きな学会で再会する、そうやってネットワークは広がっていくんだろうと思います。もちろん再会するのは今回会った人の中で半分くらいでしょう、それでもそのうちさらに半分の人とは今後10年、20年と付き合っていく、そんな気がしています。
こうした学会に来ると、いつも以上に自分がアメリカの大学院にいることによって持ってしまっている特殊性というか、彼らとの比較を通じてそうしたものを感じとってしまいます。その中で、自分は日本の研究を発表しているわけですが、いつもよりもアメリカの大学で日本の研究をしている、それはどうして必要な作業で、今回のようなヨーロッパの人口学者が集まる場で聞き手にどういうメッセージを届けた方がいいのだろうか、言葉を話しながら考えます。僕の考えや発言は、アメリカでトレーニングを受けながら、日本という非西洋の国を対象にしている研究者という条件・制約のもとに形成されている、そういうコンテクスト性があり、こういう学会では、そうしたコンテクスト性に、自分自身よりセンシティブになってきます。博士課程も後半に入って、昔よりも目の前にある現実をがむしゃらにかきむしるのではなく、自分の立場について少し俯瞰的になって考えている気がします。
