Assortative mating, preference, opportunity structure

It is well known that assortative mating is influenced by preference and opportunity structure. The latter is often translated into marginal distribution in log-linear modeling, and log-linear modeling is often criticized by its inability to account for the effect of opportunity. Harmonic mean model is an alternative approach that explicitly distinguishes between preference and opportunity, but it doesn't assume both of them are interacted. Recent studies, however, suggest that the effect of preference on assortative mating depends on opportunity structure. Also, changes in opportunity affect assortative mating through shifting preference (mediation). A good example is the reversal of the gender gap in education makes men increasingly seek to marry highly educated women. Any methods that can disentangle these relationships?
