タイラー・コーエン「大格差」

生活感のない生活をしていますが、諸事情で以下の文献を読んだのでその要約。中盤はコンピュータの話なので省略。どうでもいいですが訳のタイトル、「大格差」よりも「平均の終焉」の方が良かったかなと。

Cowen, Tyler. 2013. Average is Over: Powering America Beyond the Age of the Great Stagnation. Dutton. (=2014, 池村千秋訳, 『大格差—機械の知能は仕事と所得をどう変えるか—』, NTT出版.)

 人工知能や高度なコンピュータのデータ解析に代表される技術進歩(ムーアの法則)が様々な分野で見られ、これら規制が弱い機械の知能に関わる分野ではイノベーションがますます生じるようになる(第1章)。機械が生み出す利益はコンピュータ技術や情報処理機器と「一緒に働くことのできる」人材、あるいは高度に分業化したプロジェクトを適切に管理できるマネジメント層に流れる。単にSTEM教育を受けた人が有利になるというわけではなく、「テクノロジーの知識を現実世界の問題解決に結びつける能力」(e.g. マーケティング能力)(p.27)を持つ人が優遇される。所得格差が拡大する中で、分化した嗜好を把握できる能力が重要になる。また、経済的価値の測定が容易になることで、学歴にかかわらず生産性の多寡で雇用される「超実力主義社会」が進行する。テクノロジーへの依存が高まる多くの分野において、労働者には高い士気を持ち長期にわたって協調し、正確に業務を遂行する「真面目さ」が要求されるようになる。労働力の量ではなく質が重要になるにつれ、これまで以上に能力や資格に基づく選抜が激しさを増し、結果として中流層は薄くなる(第2章)。機械が人間の職を奪うわけではない。アメリカの高い失業率の原因は、新しく生み出される職が低賃金の一方、労働参加率の低さから示されるように、「中流」を志向する多くのアメリカ人にとって現在の職業が「割に合わない」とみなされているからだ(第3章)。

 1970年代から続くアメリカにおける賃金の停滞は、中国などへの生産拠点の流出によって生じているとする研究があるが、企業のこうした動きを抑制することは難しく、移転が盛んな産業では生産性が増している。仮に雇用を国内に留めておきたければ移民に対して寛容な策をとるべきだろう。労働市場の二極化とともに、都市や国家も分化する。アメリカやヨーロッパでは、学歴や所得による居住地の分離が進行している(第9章)。社会の分厚い中流層を維持するためには教育が重要になる。安価に提供され柔軟性に富むオンライン教育は大都市に住んでいない人にも教育を行き渡らせる可能性を持つ(第10章)。現代の多くの職業がその土台を置いている科学分野においては、役割の専門分化が進み、改名すべき問題が複雑化し、革新的な業績を上げる年齢が遅くなりつつある。こうした不可逆的な潮流の結果、徐々にコンピュータが科学的発見の中心的位置を占めるようになる。経済学分野では、ビッグデータの浸透とともに、理論的背景が比較的弱いデータの質に重きを置いた分析が増えている(第12章)。今まで述べてきた労働市場の変化によって、社会は15%の富裕層とその他大勢に分極化する。今後は、前者と高齢者が政治的な影響力を増すようになる。増税と社会保障は維持されるが、次第に財政難が生じ、企業負担・国民負担を通じて実質賃金が減る可能性がある。所得の二極化は学歴と所得に基づく居住の分離が進行させ、蓄積した資産の格差は現在よりも大きくなり、高齢期の生活に影響を与える(第12章)。

日本教育社会学会若手セミナー

上記学会教育部が若手育成のために毎年開いているセミナーに初参加。東京理科大学にて、1日目に天野郁夫先生によるご講演、2日目は三つの部会に分かれたワークショップでした。

天野先生のご業績、恥ずかしながら試験の社会史、学歴の社会史くらいしか存じ上げなかったのですが、当初は近代化の中における教育の役割、東大に来てからは徐々に選抜や学校から仕事への移行過程という(最近ホットと外野から見ても感じる)テーマに触れ始める、ただし研究の主要な関心は高等教育研究にあるというのがよくわかりました。森先生の遠近感調整のためのコメントもお見事でした。

気になった点がいくつか。天野先生の研究者人生はそのまま教育社会学の発展の歴史と重ね合わせることができるのかなと思いましたが、その中で先生は「教育社会学がエスタブリッシュメントされてしまった」、ようするに昔は(教育学全体の中でしょうか)他の研究領域が目をつけていたかった隙間を埋めていくという産業だったのですが、今は教育社会学をやっているというだけで、何か立派なことを研究しているように聞こえてしまう、さらには、そうやって学会も大きくなり、顕在的なメンバーも増えていくと同時に、そうした読者にしか対象にしなくても十分回すことのできる規模になってしまい、結果として「異なる分野の人に読んでもらう」機会が必然的に減りつつあるのではないかといった趣旨のご発言がありました。ようするに、学問の制度化の過程で自由度が失われるという話かなと思いましたが、これとの関連で先生は理論は問いに応じて変えればよく、包丁だけ研ぎ澄ましても意味はないとおっしゃっていて、これも(私から見るとやや工学的な毛色の強い)教育社会学の特徴なのかなと思いました。

二日目は三つの部会(混合研究法、コストの低調査計画、比較研究)に分かれてワークショップでした。私は有田先生の第三部会を選択。自分くらいしか比較をしていない研究者はいないと勘違いしていたのですが、趣旨としてはこれから始める人でも良いという感じだったようです。有田先生は割とカジュアルに(そこまで高くハードルを設定せずに)地域研究をしてみてもいいのではないかとおっしゃっていたのが印象的でした。また、地域研究から出発した自分の研究を社会学、ないしそれ以外の分野の人に読んでもらうための暗黙知みたいなものを幾つか紹介していただき、これもありがたかったです。将来的に国際学会などで報告する際にも、やはりなんで日本なのかというのは潜在的に問われる可能性が高く、そういう意味では自分も広義の地域研究者、比較社会学者になるのかなと思うので、そういう事情もあり受講しました。そんな偉そうなことを考える前に実際にフィールドに入って真摯に研究している、しようとしている人が大半だったので、私みたいな天の邪鬼がいてもいいかなと思った次第です。強く印象に残ったのは、昨日の天野先生のご講演もひきながら、いかに自分の研究を、その社会を知らない人に面白く伝えるかを常に考える必要があるというのが外国研究・比較研究者の「恵まれた逆境」であると先生が形容していた点でした。天野先生のすき間産業(B級グルメ論)とも似ています。もちろん、一度フィールドにどんな形であれどっぷりつかることが必要なのでしょうが、おそらく、そのあとで「外部者の視点で」冷めた目で見るという視点を強調されておられたのも、そうした違う関心を持つ人にどう研究をアピールするかという点と関連しているのかなと思いました。

というわけで、総じて満足な会でした。今後も検討しながら参加したいと思います。

教育社会学会は千人程度の中規模学会ということである程度小回りが利くということもあるのかこういう教育プログラムもあるのかなと思いました。所属している学会だと、数理も若手支援は充実しているかなと思いますが、教育と同じ規模感であろう家族社会学会には、こういった若手向けのプログラムがなさそうに思えるのでしょうが、いや、じつはあるのかも。。。

2次分析研究会報告会を終えて

弟の卒園式に出るため帰省中。そういうわけで今日の学部卒業式はFBで確認。

先日の2次分析研究会報告会では活発な議論がなされたのですが、そこで得た示唆を今後の分析に生かそうと色々と考えているのですが、その一方で、やや言葉にしにくいのですが、どういうスタンスで研究に臨んでいけばいいのだろうかという点で、少し課題が見つかる会でもありました。

伏線としては、最近とある事情で社会学、政治学の方法論(どういう状況でどのような手法=方法を使えばよいかに関する諸研究くらいの意味)の文献を読み漁っているのですが(Goldthorpe 2015; 保城 2015やもっと有斐閣アルマのような基本的な方法論の本とか)、そうした文献では、メインではないにしろ、(経験的)研究に対してどのようなスタンスをとるのがよいかという話がなされています。具体的にいうと、その分析からどのような観察可能な含意(KKV)が導き出されるのか、それは記述的なレベルでの推論もあれば、統計的な連関(踏み込んでいけば因果推論)、もしくはプロセスに焦点を置いた説明、さらに方法とある程度関連する知見の一般的な性格(仮説検証、新しい原因の発見etc)に関して、などです。

僕の雑感では、政治学の方法論では、取り扱う対象は同じでも、ケースの大きさ(Small N vs Large N)によって方法が異なり、結果として導き出されるインプリケーションの特徴にも差異が出るという論調で様々な方法を紹介するように見えます。KKVのような本も、要するにSmall Nの研究で生じるような(代表的にはサンプルのバイアス)問題を、量的な研究と同じような枠組みで考えることで、少しは補正できるよというスタンスで議論が展開されているように見えますし、Small N側の人も、ケース数を増やすことについては(理想的には)賛同しているように見えます。なので、俯瞰するとケース数からある程度方法が分かれているように見えるのですが、本質的にはその方法で何がわかるのか、あるいはわからないのかで議論されている印象です。

社会学において、(英語文献で)こうした量・質が同じような土台に立って議論されているものを私は知らないのですが、日本語文献で(もう少し柔らかい感じで)紹介されているものとして、「社会学研究法 リアリティの捉え方」(今田編, 2000)があります。この文献では、社会学方法論として、大きく「意味探求(解釈学)」「帰納的統計分析」「演繹的数理解析」の三つが挙げられています。

この時点で、「帰納的」統計分析に??となる人もいるかもしれません。私も最初よくわかりませんでした。いや、もちろん言わんとしていることは数理的な手法と比べるとわかるのですが、それこそ2次分析をしている側からすると「いや計量分析でも仮説検証するし」と言いたくなるのですが、そういった主張は佐藤俊樹先生が担当された章で簡潔に「つまらない」とされています。俊樹先生としては、統計的な説明も突き詰めれば「解釈」の一種で、データから導き出される変数間の連関に対して、我々の側で意味を見つけなければ説明は陳腐なものになるだろうというのを、Zeiselのアメリカの女性の婚姻状態とキャンディの消費の例(結婚していないとキャンディを消費しがちになる=未婚女性は甘いものが好き、という関係は年齢を統制すると消える)を用いて説明しています。

基本的に賛同するとともに、統計的説明も解釈の一種かというと少し強すぎな主張かもしれないなと思います。多くの実証研究をやっていると自負する人は、少し奢りかもしれませんが、ある程度演繹的に(仮説設定のレベルで)、変数間の関係については理解がされていると考えるんじゃないでしょうか。僕自身も、社会科学では十分演繹的な説明が占める余地は大きいと考えています。もちろん、設定した仮説では説明しきれないある種の「発見」を事後的に(帰納的に)意味解釈するのが分析の醍醐味だと言われればそうだなと思いますし、この点を強調する人もいるかと思いますが、同時に分析が全てこうした志向性で占められるべきかと言われるとどうかなと思います。既存の先行研究で指摘されてきた通説を新しいデータで再確認することに対して、読む限りでは俊樹先生はそこまでの重点を置かれていないように見受けられましたが、例えば、保城(2015)で紹介されているように、ある命題が複数の分析で確証され続ければ中心極限定理の比喩で、徐々に真理に近づいていくだろうという考えも十分認められるべきだろうと思います。


あまり回答らしいものはないのですが、そういう本を読みながら2次分析研究会という営みを考えると、はて2次分析でどういう研究すればいいのだろうと考えます。

今回はパネルデータを使った分析なので、口上としては「cross sectionでは統制できない個人の観察されない異質性を統制することで」みたいな文句を言えることができるのですが、そうすると、あらゆるcross sectionで行われた研究を固定効果モデルにかけることで(論理的には)論文が書くことができます(雑誌に載るかどうかは別としてDPくらいにはなるでしょう)。要するに「ヤッコウ」批判にも似ているのですが、おそらくそうした観察されない異質性統制のロジック以外の部分での貢献、あるいは異質性を統制することで何が観察可能な含意として導けるのか(それが社会学的にどのような認識利得があるのか)を改めて説明する必要があると思います。果たして、それが2次分析研究会でどれほど共有されているかわかりません。ただ、個人的にそうした前口上がヤッコウ批判に耐えられるのかよくわからないなと思って考えていました。

要するに、研究は統計的な分析以外の部分で総合的に評価されるべきだろうということです。そんなに難しいことではありません。それは、本来変数間の連関で観察できない過程(社会学的な研究の多くでは、個人の行為に対する意味づけの部分など)に対して、概念を揃え(分析枠組み)、概念間の関係性を説明する(理論)ことが必要だと思いますし、その視点がどれだけ既存の研究と差異化できているのかという点でも、研究が評価されることになるでしょう。(かなり脱線しますが、RCTも仮説レベルで観察できない個人の意味づけに関する理論と理解していますし、それが社会学的にクリティカルな部分だからこそ、反対論者も多いのでしょう。調査観察データで操作化できる理論の中では、RCTがかなり有望な位置を占めているのだろうなという感じはありますし、逆に言うとそれ以外で何が対抗理論としてあるのかはよくわかりません(というとラディカルですが)。もちろん、観察データではそうした解釈的な部分はわからないとすることも可能かなと思います、その場合は、はっきり規則性を確認する記述的な研究へ比重を移すべきでしょう。分析社会学の潮流も、中範囲の理論の中で、説明に思い切って舵を取ろうとする運動と理解しています)。


さて、2次分析研究会では一つのデータの元に多様な関心を持つ人が集まっているので、もちろんそれは研究者間のネットワーク構築や新しい視点の提供といった意味で利点はあるのですが、今言ったような分析外でのトータル評価よりも、モデリングのよしあしが議論に上ることも少なくなく、それだけを聞いていると不安になるのですが、やはり自分の本丸の研究関心を大切にしながら、それをパネルデータの分析にマッチさせていくのが穏当なのかなとここ数日考えていました。まあ、当たり前といえば当たり前のことです。来年度も頑張ります。

第61回数理社会学会@上智大学

1日目終了。2日目の報告の準備が終わらず、自由報告の途中から入りました。科警研の方のご報告がすごく面白くて、ますます地理データ分析したくなりました。

昼食はとらず、ポスター会場で始まる前に幾つか他の人のポスターをチラ見。懐かしい人にもお会いする。報告自体は、多くの人に聞いてもらえて、ただし、場所がかなり下流にあったので、絶対的な人の流れは少なかったかもしれない。なにせ36報告もあったので全部聞けた人なんていないでしょうね。個人的には科学感の分析が面白かったです。

報告終えて、シンポジウム。この手の企画だと、若手が喧嘩売って、ベテランがそれに対してうやむやな答えを返すというのが散見されるのですが、今回に関しては四人のベテランの先生の多くが、「らしさ」をもってリプライをしていたように見受けられました。途中で、過去三十年の大会スケジュールを眺めていましたが、80年代にすでにこの分析か、など驚くことも多く、ペーパーにはならなくとも、数理社会学の三十年には方法論的に非常に興味深い歴史が展開されていたのだと感慨深くなりました。

懇親会でも、初めてお会いする先生や、久しぶりの先生方など、非常に楽しめました。明日の用意をする必要があるので、遊ばず帰り、1時過ぎに完成、このクオリティで報告するのはやや恥ずかしいですが、数理社会学会の懐の大きさに甘えさせてもらいます。

初めて総会に参加して、JAMSのメンバーになったのだなという気持ちになりました。他の規模の大きい学会だとなかなか味わえないようなこじんまりとした感じが学会の魅力かもしれません。若手への支援もしっかりしていると思いますし、日社、家族社と並んでコミットしたくなる学会だなと改めて思いました。

3月9-14日

ほぼ1週間ペースになってしまいます。

9日、この日は雨が強く、起きるのにも一苦労。午前中に英語の勉強をして、午後に大学に行く用事があり、雨が辛かったが外に出る。まずは東文研で事務手続きを済ませて、予定より早く終わったので、作業をして、そのあと法学部ラウンジで仕事の話。終了後、ミーティングの上で幾つか必要になったことをすませる。

10日、翌日からの合宿の用意。賃金センサスもトライしてみたが、結局データは使えそうになかった。夕方は先日の研究会の反省を兼ねてサイゼリヤで夕食。結構話し込んで、研究室に戻ったが、作業が終わらない。帰宅後、午前3時くらいまで作業して寝る。

11日は、11時過ぎに家をでる予定で良かったので、朝起きて再び作業、特急でも作業。午後3時過ぎに鬼怒川に到着して、合宿開始。1日目はラベル作り。先行研究のまとめはすでに先入観が入っているためなかなか難しい。夕食は宴会場で和食。アルカリ性の温泉に癒される。14時46分は電車の中で迎える。笹林の前で1分間の停車。

12日、外は雪が降っており、山林が雪化粧をしていた。部屋のベランダから一枚撮って、会議室で早めに作業。朝食後、ひたすらグルーピング。昼食はホテルから数分の蕎麦屋。自分だけ冷たいのを頼んで寒い思いをする。戻ってきてまた作業、夕食はビュッフェで食べ過ぎる。作業を終えて、風呂、そしてコンパ。先生も午前1時くらいまで話に参加してくださって、仲の良いゼミ。結局、最後まで残った数人で2時40分まで色々と話す。

13日はKJ法で作ったポスターの報告。終了後、予定がある人が早めに帰る。特に予定を立てていなかった自分は、先輩と二人で日光東照宮へ。高地ということもあり、雪が積もっており、寒い。しかも、頭上の木から雪が落ちてきたりで、風邪をひきそうだった。それなりに楽しんで、帰京。まずは研究室に行って、お土産を置き、作業して帰宅。

14日はやや寝坊。調べ物や作業をして、2時過ぎに研究室へ。JAMSの分析を進める。16時からByun先生のセミナー。assortative mating (marital sorting)とchildren's academic achievementsの関係はテクニカルな問題よりも理論的に問題を設定しにくいから既存の研究が少ないんだと思う。6時前に終了して、研究室で再び作業。帰宅して、今に至る。

3月8日

わかってはいるんだけどなかなかできないことですね。研究室の院生仲間でこういう感じのスタイルで論文書けば業績めちゃくちゃ出せるんじゃないかと思うときがあります。


今日は9時半から寮の方向性ミーティング。終了後、寮長が昼食を用意してくれて、一応全て食べて、結構眠くなってしまう。作業して、新国にいってイェヌーファを観劇。終了後、明大前で軽くご飯食べて、帰宅。引き続き作業。

3月7日(修論について)

少し精神的に落ち着いてきて、修論のことも徐々に考えられるようになってきました。

基本的に修論は、家族形成と不平等について扱います。特に、世帯の不平等が個人のライフコース上のイベントを通じて、どう生成され、維持されるかに着目します。背景として、近年先進諸国で世帯所得の不平等化が主張されるときの女性の就労と学歴同類婚の増加に着目します。アウトカムとしては、単に収入の変化だけではなく、世代間、つまり子ども世代への影響についても少し触れたいかなと思います。

対象は日本です。といっても、これは日本に特別の関心があるというよりは、経路依存的にともいえるし、他に関心が強い国がないからというやや消極的な理由でもあります。とはいえ、日本を一つのケースとしてみると、既存の研究の想定をやや修正するような魅力を持っていることも事実です。

ひとまず、日本を取り上げる理由を妥当なものにするため、修論の冒頭で国際比較の中に日本を位置付けたいと思います。CHAのnested analysisを比喩的に捉えながら、Large Nの国際比較で日本がどう位置付けられるかを明らかにして、Small Nに移るときに、そこからもしかするとカウンターパートとして適当な国を選ぶかもしれません。それは、例えば日本は他の国と違ってなぜXXなのかというときの、原因を「大きな」ものにするときは、ある種決定論的に(ミルの一致・差異法みたいに)比較をする必要があるからです。とはいえ、主眼はGoldthorpeの枠組みにある程度乗っかって人口学的な規則性をメカニズムで説明するという趣旨なので、どのレベルの原因を主に検討するかによって分析内容は異なる可能性が高いです。一応、今まで触ってきたデータを使えればいいかなとは思います。見込みがありそうならば、少し拡大して、博論もこういう方向性でいきたいかなと思います。

今日は午後に2次分析研究会に参加して、報告を四つほど聞いてきましたが、何かを説明するという趣旨の発表よりも、記述的な分布を見てみたという報告もあり、この間の研究会でも思いましたが、メカニズム重視の人と、記述的分布からの語り重視の立場には、ある程度世代差があるのかもしれません。

後から見て人口学の雑誌がないなと思ったのでDemography, European Journal of Demography, Demographic Researchを追加しておきました。

3月2日-6日

気持ち的な余裕が出てきたので書きます。1日にお腹を壊してから、2日もそんなに長子は良くなかったと記憶していますが、一応多重代入法の勉強会に10時から参加。ドタキャンが相次ぐ。それなりに早起きをしたので、眠くなりうどんを食べた後昼寝。こくわがたには3人で行った。日曜のレジュメを作りながら、自治体の方の分析を進めるがエクセルの限界を垣間見ることに。帰りにCHASSを読みながら電車に乗っていたら三鷹まで乗り過ごしてしまった。夕食ぎりぎりに間に合って、ご飯を食べて、金曜日の報告の用意を進める。調べてみると、コミットメントスケールはやはり研究されているようだった。蛍光灯を取り替える。スライドを半分終わらせて就寝。午前2時頃かな、それ以来少しリズムが狂う。

3日は大学に行くやる気が起きず、家で作業。ぐっすり寝て、少し作業して、また寝る。5時過ぎに買い物に出て、久しぶりにしっかり買い物をする。無印でハンドシュレッダー、書類入れ、セリアでファイル、あと散歩でボリビアのコーヒー。ポリ袋も買って、出る前には書類の整理もして、結構気分はよかった。井の頭公園で、ストリートライブをしている女性がいて、声が気に入ってしばらく聞き入ってた。法政高校出身の3人組バンドのボーカルらしい。その後、返信してなかったメッセージや新年度のことについて計画する。シラバスが開講されていたり、成績が開示されてたり、そういう時期。家も少し探していた。TOEFLの予約の空きを伺いながら、CHASSのレジュメを作る。Ruechemeyer の文章が読み難い。

金曜日は家で作業して、こくわがた経由で大学へ、中央線が御茶ノ水に着く寸前で京浜東北の人身事故のため少し遅れる。研究室で印刷して、研究会で報告。コーヒーを入れるときにブレーカーを落としてしまった。研究会は意外と人が来ていて驚く。終了後、同期と先輩で夕食。

土曜日もまずはうどんを食べに大学へ。生活リズムが崩れているので朝ごはんは抜かしている。少し面倒な仕事を片付ける。その後、ゼミのOBOG会へ。自分が何をやっているか、いまいち近況を伝えるのが難しい。前座のキャリア談話会はワークライフバランスがテーマということで、時代も変わったなという感じ。

久しぶりな顔もちらほらという感じで、終了後は再び研究室に戻るが、腹痛を再発してほとんどトイレに入ることに。作業して、帰宅。育児休業の分析のため、先行研究を眺めるが、なぜこれまでの研究が育児休業の就業継続への効果ばかりやっていて、そもそもどういう人が育児休業を取得するのかという側面の分析がほとんどないのかがわかった。要するに、家計研パネルなどでは「就業先に育児休業制度はあるか」で尋ねており本人が実際にそれを取得しているかどうかはわからない。したがって、どのような属性を持つ人が育休を取得しやすいかという分析が難しい。この辺りは、モデリング含めていろいろと工夫できそうな気がしてきた。

6日は、10時ごろ起床して、12時過ぎに大学。ライフコース分析の続きと、自治体の分析。久しぶりに山手で夕食。たまに来ると本当に美味しい。少し統計の勉強をして帰宅。二人としか話さなかったので、土曜とは好対照。TOEFLも予約し、少し落ち着いてきたので、いろいろ勉強をしたい。

2月20日-3月1日

20日から一週間以上書いてませんでした。

24日から27日までフィリピンに滞在していました。フィリピン大学で開催された国際ワークショップに参加していたためです。


20日は研究会のための作業をした後に新宿で用事。済んだ後、ずいぶん疲れてしまったので、紀伊国屋で洋書チラ見して、吉祥寺に戻って閉店間際の雑貨屋回って、カーニバルでオーガニック飲料とインスタントのフォー買って、いせやではつ二本食べて帰ってきた。結局だましだましやってるので疲れは蓄積するのだろうけど、風呂に入ってストレッチをする。もう少し頑張ればフィリピンでゆっくりできると考えて頑張っていた。

21日はリーディングの方でQEなる一年の進捗を報告する機会。月曜の報告会のスライドは30時間くらいかけてもまだ出来上がらなかったのに、今年度の総括みたいなスライドは1時間ちょっとでできてしまったのが人生の辛いところである。個人々々が何を規範として家族を形成しているかを踏まえないと理解が浅くなるんじゃないという納得するコメントもらう。穏当に終了して、久しぶりにみんなとランチをして楽しんだ。勢い余ってみんなにありがとうと言ってしまいそうになるくらい、楽しかった。その後、大学に戻り、46部の報告資料を印刷する。これもなかなか難儀な作業で、帰ってきたのが午前1時前くらい。

翌日(22日)は早起きして、10時半からの研究会に。自分は第一部会の最後の発表だった。前日の深夜に出来上がって、直前も電車の中で編集してた出来立ての報告になってしまい、テクニカルなところよりも、仮説に至るまでの論理的な部分に対するコメントを多くもらい、未熟さを痛感する。発表しながらここは自信ないなというところはやっぱりあって、そういう箇所は思い切って削って、結果的に焦点のしぼった分析にしたい。短期間でいろいろ詰めてやったので、ログリニアモデルに関しては色々勉強になることもあり、副産物として享受。内輪の研究会だから許されるのかもしれないけど、頑張らないと。まあ、来月の学会に照準。とはいいつつ、自転車操業がだんだん嫌になってきた。しょうもない発表だったけれど、この一ヶ月うまくいくのかよくわからないまま迷走してた分析にひとまず目処が立ったので妙な安心感がある。鬱々しい気分は少し取れたので、厄払いをしているような気分になった。懇親会で修論の話をして、なんとなくこれでいけるかなという感触を得た。懇親会終了後の二次会的な場にもいて、長話に入らせてもらう。疲れてしまったけど、いい日ではあった。

23日はちょっと変な1日で、まず10時からJGSSデータを使った分析勉強会。こくわを挟んで、次に計量研。それが終わった後に因果推論の勉強会。全部に参加したのは自分と主催のむぎさんのみ。そのむぎさんと、明日寝坊しないようにねと言い合いつつ、帰路につく。ほんと、2月が暇なんて誰が言ったんですかね。

24日は早朝に家を出て、9時半のフライトに乗ってマニラへ。ホテルまで長い道のり(車の運転の荒さが胃にくる。ホテルはRichmonde Hotelという4つ星ホテルで、大学から派遣されてきている待遇なのだなと思った。周りの友人に幾つかハプニングはあったが、見た目は綺麗なホテルにリラックスしながら、翌日の報告スライドを急ピッチで作成する。夜は引率の先生がホストのアジアセンターにて報告をするのを聞きに行った。周りの報告者の友人たちも結構疲れていたようだった。終了後に、センター内にあるカフェで夕食。ホテルに戻って、今後の進路についてぼやっと考えた。

25日は報告。しょうもない発表をし終えて穢れが取れた感じがある。朝はかなりネガティブになっていたけれど、先生からのコメントをもらって、いけるんじゃないかという気がしてくる。この手のやる気を起こさせる力に関しては、先生は随一。自分のを含めて8つの報告をこなす長めの1日を終え、夕食はフィリピン料理。

二日目(26日)は報告を3つこなしたあと、マニラ観光。Fort santiago(マニラ要塞)周辺の、旧スペイン植民地下の遺跡をめぐったり。歩き疲れたけど、だんだんと修学旅行の様子を出してきた一行と共に楽しい1日をすごす。この1日は、一ヶ月の中でもすごく幸せだった。夕食は近くの9階建てのホテル屋上にあるレストラン。夜景が綺麗で、大満足。

少し真面目な話をすると、今回のワークショックは、月並みな言葉で言えば色々と相対化された三日間だった。それはワークショップの趣旨、あと法研の人との会話で。研究にも色々なアプローチがあるし、人間の集団なので色々と派閥もあり、その中でどう自分の研究を位置付けるかということでしょうか。もっと理想的な話もした気がします。

27日は10時ごろにホテルをでて、13時半のフライトで19時半ごろに羽田に到着。空港でいくつかお土産を購入したり。疲れていたので、すぐ寝た。

28日はポスター報告を1日かけて済ます。註を一個付け加えるための分析に4時間くらい要した。他に原稿の校正。

29日、まず原稿をいじって郵便局へ。次に勉強会で今度の学会で報告するポスターを見てもらう。終了後、少しぼやっとしながら、だんだんと腹が痛くなることに気づく。帰宅して寝るが、体調は悪化する流れ。

1日、お腹が痛いので、ランチの予定をキャンセルして14時過ぎまで寝る。ストレスもあったのだろうか、疲れが取れて回復。その後、ポスターの修正や、今後検討する研究の分析案、結婚関係論文リストの作成など。4日の研究会のスライド作りや、メールの返信。あと、部屋の掃除。
